What changed for 2026-27?
Since 2016, age groups were formed by calendar birth year: everyone born in 2014 played together as "the 2014s." Starting with the 2026-27 season, US Youth Soccer, US Club Soccer, and AYSO jointly group players by the August 1 - July 31 cycle instead, so age groups align with school years and teammates are more likely to be classmates. (One exception: MLS NEXT's Homegrown Division keeps birth-year age groups for FIFA alignment.) Players born August through December are the ones whose group label shifts relative to their old birth-year team - which is why some current teams will split across two age groups at the next tryout.
If you run a club: publish your new age matrix before registration opens, re-run team assignments against the new cutoff before tryouts, and give parents this calculator instead of a table with footnotes. Squadora computes age groups from the governing cutoff automatically, so rosters and registration forms stay consistent as the rule changes.
